The Classic MTB “Karwendel Route”

A popular Munich outdoor adventure highlight is the Karwendelrunde, with train to Mittenwald, a ride through the spectacular Karwendel region, then a challenging climb to the serviced Karwendelhaus for the night. On the second day we descend the Johanis Valley and cycle out through the Riss Valley, ending with a climb and descent back to Mittenwald for train return to Munich.

The protected Karwendel region is an area of stunning beauty and an important tourist attraction near Munich. Although it is much visited, you will still be able to appreciate the soaring limestone walls with a summit cross just discernable in the distance, the snow in the gullies all year if not on the peaks, the beautiful maple meadows, and the thousand-year old culture of the mountain cattle farmer with his characteristic house and barn.

The visitor in Munich will notice that the Karwendelhaus of the German Alpine Club blends perfectly with nature and the surroundings. We hope to have ascended in good time to relax on the balcony, drinking in the view that doesn’t seem quite real. Later, we will enjoy excellent food and beverages served by the family that operates the hut, before collapsing into our simple sleeping area to rest and recover for tomorrow’s ride.

Get your guide for this tour that requires very little technical skill as it is mostly on forest road, even a short connector on tar. However, it is steep, and requires prior experience of long, sustained, climbs in small ring and first gear. Don’t let the average 35km per day with saddle time of about 5 hours deceive you (more elapsed time, with breaks for the view, catch your breath, and drink lots of water). The elevation gain is more like 1,000 m, although it is well worth it! You need good legs and lungs for this trip. eBikes are welcome, but the pace is set by the guide on a standard bike.
